Behind the Scene: Mark Jolly from Lush

Mark Jolly came to Saigon with music knowledge gained from the clubs of England, where he says he went to “the kind of parties where people didn’t even need a drink to have an amazing time”. He has been working as the music programmer at Lush nightclub since its early days. When choosing which international acts to showcase, he says he draws inspiration from his own clubbing days.

It was five years ago that Mark began bringing in artists to Lush that weren’t part of the club’s established lineup of local DJs. The process started slowly, beginning with what Mark describes as “party DJs” from around the region, and soon moved on to bringing in well-respected DJs from around the world. Now, Lush has grown to become a hub for international DJs coming to the city.

Mark uses what he knows about the audience to choose which acts to bring in. He says he understands the audience’s expectations and he places emphasis on the accessibility of the music when choosing international acts.

The right balance has been struck time and time again, with Lush bringing in some of the biggest names in drum and bass, house and EDM. Their honor roll includes impressive headliners such as Nervo, Don Diablo, Stanton Warriors and Krafty Kuts. Collaborating promoters have also brought Jazzy Jeff, Goldie, Diplo, MSTKFKT, and the Prodigy’s Leeroy, to the venue.

“I just want to get people to dance and to have a good time, which is definitely something that I’m doing at Lush,” says Mark.
